Fall 2016, Digital Media Workshop
Collaboration with Ivette De Santiago
We wanted to combine a visual with words that contained personal narratives of people struggling with their identities. We used a black light because it is a device used to see things that otherwise would not be seen as people talk about subjects they would not usually discuss.
We wanted to bring to light the raw emotions of what it is like living with an identity that doesn’t fit within the expected stereotypes of today’s society. Interviewing them in the dark was easier for each person to be more open about the sensitive topics. This was mainly because it was as if they were talking to themselves and as a result we were able to capture their real emotions. Eventually almost everyone lost track of what subject each color related to as they created their visual identity on their face.
